Preparing your high school junior for senior pictures can seem overwhelming. If you’re like me, the thought of their senior year is bitter-sweet…excited for them and this next journey in their lives, but also a little overwhelmed because you have no idea what needs to be done. You’ll have a lot of decisions to make the summer before their senior year and one of them is scheduling their senior pictures.
Preparing your High School Junior for Senior Pictures
This is one of the last times in their lives your son or daughter will take pictures like this. Its a special time and important to capture who they are at this milestone in their life! Let me try to walk you through this process of preparing your high school junior for his/her senior pictures with some helpful hints and suggestions.
WHEN TO START SCHEDULING FOR SENIOR PICTURES
Let’s start with when to begin. You should begin looking for a senior photographer the spring of their senior year. Sounds crazy, right!?! I actually release my schedule sometime between the end of April and mid-May and am typically booked before the end of June so its important to get a head start!
Check for VIP Lists. If you contact me before my schedule is available, you will be placed on a VIP List which means you’ll be one of the first to receive my schedule as soon as it is available. I typically allow VIPs a two week grace period to schedule their pictures before posting my available dates on social media. Getting on the VIP List is as easy as going to my website and completing my contact form! Once my schedule is ready, you’ll receive an email with all my products, pricing and available dates.
CHOOSING A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR PHOTOGRAPHER
- Follow some of your favorite photographers on social media. You’ll want to find one your senior can relate to and one that you like their posing and editing styles. Watch their Instagram stories for behind the scenes videos to see how they interact with the seniors.
- Have your senior ask their senior friends and you can talk to senior parent’s for recommendations as well. You’ll want to ask about their quality of work, reliability, customer service, and generally, how easy they were to work with.
- Ensure they offer a variety of products. For example digital images, print products, canvas prints, custom cards/invitations, etc. I offer all these products and more through different package options as well as a’la carte ordering.
- How will they help you through the process?
In Studio Wardrobe Consultations
I work with each senior to help them choose the best outfits, colors and accessories that match their personality as well as compliment the location they choose. Seniors are also able to utilize any items in my style closet including clothing, jackets, hats, accessories, etc. for their session wardrobe at no additional cost.
You want to have options! I also work with each senior to determine the best place to take your senior pictures, taking into account your personality, style, wardrobe, hobbies, etc.
Whether you’re an athlete, a musician, artist, etc. these activities and they represent your passions. They’re important to you, and typically the things that you spend the most time on, therefore they are a reflection of you and your personality! I encourage seniors to incorporate their hobbies, sports and/or extra curricular activities in their session. These are things that say who you are at this time in your life. Click here for examples of adding hobbies to your senior session.
Choosing & Ordering Your Images, Prints & Products
Once your session is complete, there’s still a lot of decisions to make and it can be overwhelming. You want a photographer that will help you through this part of the process. I’m here to help. Once your SHP senior session is complete, we’ll schedule a Viewing and Ordering Session. During this session, I will help you make your final image choices and choose the best package to fit your personal needs. Everyone is different. Some people want digital images to print and use as they wish, some prefer to order prints and not have to do it for themselves, and some want a mixture of both. Whatever the case, I’m here to help you make that decision easier!
Many schools require seniors to submit a senior picture for the yearbook. You want to make sure this is something your senior photographer will take care of for you. My senior’s choose their favorite image which I edit as requested and submit for them!
Questions or More Information
I’ve added some images from Taylor – Hershey Montessori Class of 2020’s Senior Session. Taylor wanted nature with a lot of flowers so we chose a location that gave us several different flower options plus she brought some with her! She also wanted to include a few images highlighting her love for volleyball which we did using her varsity jacket.
